In California'southward 2022 primary election, Sacramento, Nevada, San Mateo, Madera, and Napa counties mailed ballots to every registered voter within their jurisdictions and experienced increased balloter participation. All five counties saw turnout that exceeded their voter participation rates in 2022 by at to the lowest degree eight percent, and four of the counties also beat their 2010 midterm turnouts. These increases approximated those seen across California in 2018.[45]

The term wave ballot is oft used to draw an ballot cycle in which one political party makes meaning balloter gains. How many seats would Republicans have had to lose for the 2022 midterm election to exist considered a wave election?
Ballotpedia examined the results of the l election cycles that occurred between 1918 and 2016—spanning from President Woodrow Wilson's (D) second midterm in 1918 to Donald Trump's (R) first presidential ballot in 2016. Nosotros define wave elections every bit the 20 percent of elections in that period resulting in the greatest seat swings confronting the president'southward party.
Applying this definition to U.S. Firm elections, we constitute that Republicans needed to lose 48 seats for 2022 to qualify equally a wave election.
The chart below shows the number of seats the president'southward party lost in the 11 U.S. House waves from 1918 to 2016. Click here to read the total report.
